Cyber Essentials: A cyber security scheme for all organisations

In an era where cyber attacks are growing in scale, complexity, and cost, no organisation—whether a sole trader, charity, public institution, or global corporation—is immune to the threat. Recent high-profile incidents have highlighted the devastating impact of cyber breaches, which cost the UK economy billions of pounds annually.

To combat this, the UK Government is urging organisations to achieve Cyber Essentials certification, a scheme designed to establish a minimum baseline of cyber security. Managed by IASME, the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) sole Delivery Partner, Cyber Essentials focuses on five core technical controls that protect organisations from the majority of common cyber attacks.

Why Cyber Essentials matters

The five core controls of Cyber Essentials were identified through a government-led assessment of low-skilled, internet-based attacks. These controls address the vulnerabilities most frequently exploited by cyber criminals, ensuring that certified organisations have a consistent baseline of protection.

Since its launch in 2014, Cyber Essentials has been proven to reduce incidents by up to 80%. The scheme is updated annually to address emerging threats, ensuring its continued relevance.

For those seeking additional assurance, Cyber Essentials Plus includes a technical audit to verify the implementation of these controls.

Cyber Essentials for all

  • Sole traders and micro-businesses: Cyber Essentials is straightforward and achievable, even for those with limited technical expertise. It provides clear guidance on securing devices and implementing essential controls like multi-factor authentication.
  • SMEs: Affordable and practical, Cyber Essentials certification (starting at £320 + VAT) helps SMEs meet government contract requirements, secure funding opportunities, and embed a security-conscious culture.
  • Large enterprises: For larger organisations, Cyber Essentials offers a standardised approach to cyber security across departments and supply chains.
