Two-thirds of UK workers would take legal action against their employer if their data was breached

A recent survey of 1,014 Britons by data experts Graham Coffey & Co. Solicitors has revealed that 65% would take legal action against their employer if their data was breached due to negligence.

The survey indicates that 74% trust their employer to keep their personal data secure. Despite this, 75% would report a data breach to a higher authority within their company.

Over half (55%) of respondents would consider leaving their job if their personal data was not adequately protected.

Stuart Snape, Managing Partner at Graham Coffey & Co. Solicitors, said: “These findings indicate that employees not only trust their employers to protect their data but also demand accountability. The readiness to report breaches and pursue legal action underscores the importance of transparency and the need for organisations to uphold their data protection commitments.”

“Employees are increasingly aware of their rights, including the right to claim compensation for data breaches. This awareness should prompt employers to prioritise robust data security measures and clear communication to maintain trust and prevent potential legal repercussions.”
