Private equity firms face the unique challenge of balancing their own cyber resilience, performing cyber due diligence on target companies, and managing the cybersecurity across their investment portfolios.
A recent study by S-RM revealed that 72% of private equity firms across the US and EMEA experienced a significant cyber incident in the past three years, with the average cost of a single incident reaching $3.4 million USD.
Despite this, only around half of firms have a defined and tested incident response plan or mandate regular cybersecurity training. This gap in preparedness is concerning – especially given the potential operational, legal and financial impacts of cyber incidents.
A further survey by QBE Insurance found that less than half of private equity firms evaluate the cyber resilience of target companies. For instance, only 49% conduct compliance assessments, just 46% assess supply chain resilience, and even fewer review cybersecurity policies, employee training, or incident response planning.
In today’s digital landscape where cyber risks are constantly evolving, these findings highlight a concerning trend in the private equity sector. Without robust cyber due diligence and ongoing portfolio oversight, firms risk significant financial and reputational damage.
